Cause marketing, also called cause-related marketing (CRM), refers to the partnership of a for-profit company with a nonprofit organization.
This unique marketing solution fulfills two goals: promoting the company's product or service while raising money for the nonprofit. In 2008, new research from Cone and Duke University confirmed that participation in a cause-related marketing campaign can exponentially impact a company's profits - in some cases, sales increased as much as 74 percent.
American Express witnessed the power of cause marketing firsthand. In 1983, they pioneered cause-related marketing with their campaign to raise money for the restoration of the Statue of Liberty. Each time someone used their American Express card, the company made a one-cent donation to the Statue of Liberty. Not only did they raise $1.7 million, the number of new card holders increased by 45 percent and card usage by 28 percent.
In a more recent example of a successful cause marketing campaign, Yoplait's partnership with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation recently completed its tenth year. Their "Save Lids to Save Lives" cause marketing campaign raised nearly $1.5 million in 2008 to promote breast cancer awareness - skyrocketing Yoplait's yogurt sales.
Other major companies that have participated in cause-related marketing campaigns include Target, TUMS, McDonald's, Coca Cola, and countless others. All with the same outcome - increasing sales and raising money for worthy causes.
In order to help recognize the outstanding work being done by these and other cause marketing companies, the Cause Marketing Forum created the Halo Awards. Winners of the 2008 Cause Marketing Halo Awards include Sears and McDonald's.
